The Polar Express

By Chris Van Allsburg

The book tells the story of Christmas Eve and a boy’s journey on a very special train, the Polar Express. He travels all the way to the North Pole to visit Santa and receive a special gift. He could choose anything in the world, but instead of a huge expensive toy or the latest gadget, the boy chooses something much more precious – a bell from Santa’s sleigh. Only true believers in Father Christmas can hear the bell ringing. No matter how old he gets, the boy never stops hearing the bell because after his special adventure, the boy never stops believing in Father Christmas!

Although I had seen the animated film version several times, this Christmas was the first time I read the book. I wasn’t disappointed.

The artwork really is brilliant and reminded me of many wonderful scenes from the film. I couldn’t help hearing Tom Hank’s voice as I read and anyone who has seen the film won’t be able to stop themselves singing the ‘hot chocolate’ song!

This is an excellent picture book to read, share and gift to others. The combination of text and such detailed illustrations really create the excitement of Christmas time. It reminds you how magical Christmas time is for children.

My score: 5/5 ⭐️
