Coming to England: An Inspiring True Story Celebrating the Windrush Generation

Author: Baroness Floella Benjamin

Illustrator: Diane Ewen

Coming to England is based on the true story of Baroness Floella Benjamin. As a 10-year old child, Floella and her family moved from Trinidad in the Caribbean to London, England as part of the Windrush generation.

The story explains how she had to travel by ship for two weeks before arriving in cold and unfriendly London. She had many hopes and dreams about her new life in England (including meeting the Queen!)

When the family do finally arrive in England, things don’t start out as she expected. She has worries about starting school and making new friends but even when life is difficult and she faces prejudice she is brave. With determination and the love and help of her family she makes herself a home in England.

The story is told with the bright illustrations by Diane Ewen which will help younger readers follow the story. They really help you picture what life was like in Trinidad compared to cold, grey London. The book describes some difficult times and the problems that immigrants can face but it is done in a way that children can understand and it will teach them about an important part of British History.

My score: 5/5 🚢
